Reclaimed from a large local estate in the Cotswolds
These would of been carved entirely by hand - a rare find
The troughs each measure 4ft long x 2ft wide x 15" high
The trough has an excellent patina with lovely mosses and lichens
This troughs are all in excellent condition.
Circa 1800
The troughs have a hole in the base for drainage and they are all around 9" internal depth
The troughs are all in remarkably good condition, there are no suprises to be found here, all four sides of each trough is in excellent condition and each side is nicely coloured with mosses and lichens

New Table Design - The Industrial Look

We are now making in house our own reclaimed pine tables with Plank Tops

The tables can be waxed, painted, painted and distressed or we can leave them as clean timber for you to finish.

We are able to make any size for you

The table was made by our in house team and finished by hand

The table measures 8ft long x 3ft wide x 31 ¼" tall

The Knee hole is 26" tall

The table top has been finished with 3 coats of antique pine wax.

The base has been painted and then distressed in Farrow and Ball Lamproom Gray

If you want a perfect table then this is not for you, the boards are reclaimed, they are marked, with old nail holes, saw marks etc, some of the boards have cracks and splits in them and they are not perfectly flat and square, but what they do give you is that authentic industrial look.

We have also fitted a couple of galvanised plaques to the sides of the table.

Another option is to buy your radiator in it's component parts, and then get your plumber to assemble the radiator for you, this is available on a 2 day service and you will save 10% off our normal bespoke radiator prices - call our staff to discuss this option.

Lastly we can supply you with all of your pipe to pipe measurements so that you can get all of your pipework in place ready for your bespoke radiators in early January 2012.

New Offices for UKAA - Investing for the Future

The builders have started work on our new office block and store room.

We are using reclaimed materials where possible.

We are using reclaimed bricks for a 50m long retaining wall, and the dwarf wall that goes around the building.

We will be using reclaimed tiles for the building roof, reclaimed floor boards for the floors, reclaimed pine doors and we will be making the kitchen/rest room area cupboards from reclaimed pine.

The heating will be provided by our cast iron radiators.

We are also having a 4Kw solar panel system fitted.

The wall has been designed by a local consultant. The strange thing for me was that the wall is sealed from behind, with 3 coats of a bitumen type of paint, then there is a protective board.

Behind the wall is fitted a 6 inch diameter perforated pipe. This is then covered with a 12inch thick wall of gravel, which goes up the full height of the wall.

The theory is that any water is collected in the gravel, diverted to the land drain pipe and is then taken to a soakaway, whereas i thought that we would of fitted weep holes for the water to come through.

Where the wall goes a little higher there is more steel in the footings and steel, mesh and concrete in the cavity.

The steel uprights are shown, there are two sheets of mesh in the footings, then the steel uprights are every 200mm, I have the detailed drawings for retaining walls from 800mm tall to 2m tall, if anyone would like them i can email them to you.

The steel mesh is then fitted to the uprights, the wall is then built and finally the cavity is filled with concrete.

The four seasons statues weigh 300kg each and are 6ft 6" tall

This was a suprise birthday present for one of our customers.

The post office have always given us this guidance.

You can paint your post or pillar box in your own choice of colour - even the official colour which is 'Post Office Red'.

What makes it an official post box for the public to use is the collection plate on the front of a post box that states collection times etc, all of our customers tend to put there house name or number in the space left by the collection plate.

Keeping your Stove Glass Clean

The Carron stoves are all fitted with two air controls - 'Top' and 'Bottom'

When you first light the fire you should open the top and bottom controls. The bottom control will adjust how quickly your fire will burn.

The top control can be adjusted to 'steer' the smoke and flames away from the glass door, thus keeping your glass clean.

Our lads in the workshops are currently working on several projects.

We have 4 Coalbrookdale benches being restored, two in the Nasturtium pattern, 1 gothic pattern and 1 fern and blackberry pattern. All of these will be advertised in the coming weeks.

We are refurbishing a couple of batches of Church chairs.

We have just started refurbishing a Coalbrookdale cast iron fountain. This is a very rare item, again this will be advertised in a few weeks time.

We have two spiral staircases undergoing refurbishment.

We have several new products just in - they will be advertised in the coming few days - they include a new Carron stove - the Dante - this is a 5kw stove suitable for use in smokeless zones, so that it can be used anywhere.

New additions to the door furniture range include, a letter plate internal draught excluder, this is a very nice quality item available in a range of finishes.

We have a few new products to add to our cast iron radiator range, this includes new valves, and new wall stays, again they will be added to the website in the next few days.

Set of Chairs Painted and Distressed for a Customer

We have just painted and distressed a set of 6 chairs for a customer.

The chairs are first washed down with sugar soap, this removes the old wax polish.

We then undercoat the chairs and then apply two top coats of Farrow and Ball paint - 'Pointing'.

We then sand the chairs to create the areas of 'wear'. We finally wax the chair all over and polish with a fine wire wool.

•The overall measurements are 34" tall (not inluding the securing bolt) and 41½" wide at the base

•There is no damage or cracks, the original clapper is still fitted

•The bell is from St Kentigerns Church, Hope Street Lanark Scotland

•The Church was converted to residential/commerical use

•The Bell weighs 613Kg

•The bell was made by Mears and Stainbank Founders London

•The inscription on the bell states: To the glory of God and in sacred memory of The Rev'd Thomas Stark disruption Minister of Lanark, this bell is the gift of Miss Jessie Purdie AD 1898

Stone Sculpture from Lichfield Cathedral

Unique item - Circa 1650

This item was discovered only 3 miles from Lichfield Cathedral

We have been in discussion with the Cathedral

They have verified that the Sculpture dates from Circa 1650

The Cathedral was constructed from the stone from 5 local quarries - the stone used in this sculpture is from one of those 5 quarries.

During this 1600s Lichfield Cathedral along with other similar buildings were demolished. Statues and sculptures such as this one were left on the ground.

This particular statue was removed a couple of miles, and this intervention as ensured that it has survived until today.

The Cathedral has mainly two sizes of statue, the lower statues of which this was one were around 5ft tall, the higher ones were all around 8ft tall, therefore from the ground they all looked around the same size.

The statue was discovered with soem damag - this has been sympathetically restored by our local stonemason using a local stone which is very similar to the original stone.

The statue is 63" tall and weighs around ½ ton

There were other faults with the statue and our stonemason has ensured that the statue is suitable for use in or outdoors and is now in a very solid and stable state

The statue is of a Prophet

Painting our Cast Iron Lamposts

We are able to clean off all the old paint from our cast iron lamposts and then finish them with a red oxide primer. The cost for this is £175 for one post.

We are also able to apply 2 coats of top coat in your choice of colour - this is an additional £75 (this includes the labour and the paint) - we will give you the left over paint for you to touch up after installation.

We used the black gloss finish - which in practice meant that the guttering could be finished in a day and all scaffold could be removed, and we did not have to do any painting

He has used only the very best English Air Dried Oak to match our Reclaimed Oak Worcester Cathedral Chairs

The Table Measures 15ft 2" Long x 4ft 8" Wide

You can comfortably seat 14 Worcester Cathedral Chairs around the table

The Chairs are 37" tall with a seat height of 17"

The Worcester Cathedral Chairs where installed in the Cathedral in 1874. The Cathedral was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott

We are now able to offer the Princess in 810mm tall x 125mm deep and the Rococo in a 660mm tall x 120mm deep

The length and colour of these radiators can be made to your own bespoke requirements - of course they are also available in a primer finish as well.

The per section prices are as follows

Princess 810mm x 125mm £37 per section in a primer finish

Castle Ring Hill Fort

Castle Ring represents a type of fortified settlement; know as a hill fort, built by the Iron Age occupants of Britain around 500 B.C.

It is the best preserved of the eight in Staffordshire. As their name suggests hill forts were built on high ground reinforcing natural defences by earth banks and ditches. At a height of nearly 800 feet above sea level Castle Ring is on the highest point of Cannock Chase and when built would doubtless have had commanding views over the surrounding countryside giving local inhabitants early warning of any advancing enemy forces.

Whilst hill forts are characteristic monuments of the Iron Age archaeological evidence suggests that, in some cases, they may have developed from enclosed settlements of the earlier Bronze Age. Although flint implements of Bronze Age date have been found at Castle Ring no definite conclusions can be drawn on such an early occupation of the site.

Castle Ring would have been an important fortification of one of the iron Age tribes occupying the area before the Roman invasion of Britain, lying on the boundary between the two major tribes of the midlands, the Cornovii and the Coritani. Whether it was one of these or a separate local tribe that occupied the site is not known. However the finding of elaborate gold "torcs" or collars at nearby Needwood and Tamworth does suggest that there was a local Iron Age chieftain resident somewhere in the area.

In its heyday Castle Ring would have been a centre of activity for the surrounding area, perhaps with a settled community living within the protection of the rampart, in round houses up to 20-40 feet across. Most of the inhabitants would have been engaged in agriculture, but pottery, metalwork and textiles may also have been made by specialist craftsmen. In addition the site would have acted as a refuge for a scattered farming community in times of trouble.

Hill forts vary in size and complexity of defensive structures. Caste Ring hill fort is a multi-vallate hill fort comprising a number of banks (or ramparts) and ditches. The ramparts appear to have been simply constructed using materials excavated to form the ditches. The main rampart may have been faced with timber and would have been topped by a timber palisade to provide a protected sentry walk around it. The main rampart is considerably higher than the outer banks, by up to 18 feet in places, and would have given defenders manning it a clear advantage over potential invaders.

On the north and west sides, where the sloping ground provide good natural defences, the site is defended by two banks and ditches. To the south-east there are up to four banks and ditches to provide better defences in an area of fairly level ground. At the north-eastern corner of the site is the entrance, slightly inturned for better defence. Evidence from other hill forts suggests that this would have been protected by massive wooden gates. The corresponding gap in the south-west rampart is unlikely to be original as most hill forts of similar size to Castle Ring had only on entrance for defensive reasons.

In A.D. 43 the invasion of Britain by the forces of Imperial Rome was soon followed by the subjugation of southern and central Britain which became a province of the Roman Empire. Castle Ring occupies a position overlooking the Watling Street, now the A5 trunk road, the major Roman communication route through the Midlands to the north-west. Like some other hill forts, Castle Ring may have continued in use during the Roman occupation of Britain or, if vacated it may have been re-occupied in the fifth or sixth century A.D. following Roman withdrawal from the country.

Later in the twelfth or thirteenth century a medieval building was constructed within the fort. The sandstone foundations of this building, a rectangular hall, possibly a hunting lodge for the royal forest of Cannock Chase, a visible today in the north-west corner of the enclosure.

Today the earthworks of Castle Ring are still an impressive site giving us a glimpse of over two thousand years of man's occupation of the Cannock Wood area.

Since 1933 Castle Ring has been owned by the District Council. It is a scheduled Ancient Monument in order to protect it and any evidence of those who occupied it in former times which may lie beneath the ground. Whilst it can be approached by several footpaths across Cannock Chase the main approach today is from the car park off Holly Hill Road. Castle Ring affords a pleasant walk with views from the ramparts over the earthworks where one can stop and speculate on how our ancestors may have lived and how they defended their hill top.

A particularly good view over the nine acre hill fort can be obtained from the highest point on the ramparts from the site of the old triangulation pillar now marked by an area of concrete. These pillars were used by the Ordnance Survey when making detailed maps of the whole country. It is said that from this point that, before the growth of all the trees on the Chase, it was possible to see seven counties of England and three of Wales. It was also said that with a good pair of binoculars one could see ships on the Mersey but this may well be wishful thinking. A little further round the ramparts a clearing in the surrounding forests gives a fine view over Rugeley and its power station across the valley of the River Trent.

A History of Cannock Wood

'Castle Ring'

The rural village of Cannock Wood is in the Cannock Chase Council administrative district of Staffordshire. The village lies on the south-eastern edge of Cannock Chase adjacent to the Iron Age hill fort known as Castle Ring, which at 801ft above sea level is the highest point on Cannock Chase. Cannock Wood has the distinction of being the only village completely within the boundaries of the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a fact of which the villagers are very proud.

It is not known how long Cannock Wood has existed but it is recorded that in 1666 it was a hamlet of eighteen houses and that in 1851 there were 'a few good farms and 275 inhabitants' with 'a large proportion of the open heath, where there are a number of cottages with small plots of garden ground attached to them'.

There are several suggestions as to how the village got its name - one of which surmises that "Cannock Wood" means the "wood of the Canks (or Cangi), a tribe who occupied Cannock Chase at the time of the Roman invasion. Another suggestion is that the name is taken from the word "knock", an old Irish word meaning hill. It has also been muted that "Cannock" comes from two Anglo Saxon words meaning "powerful oak", possibly a reference to the tree which was once so numerous on the Chase. Yet another suggests that "Cannock Wood" was originally "Canutes Wood". Perhaps we will never know!

Castle Ring Camp was bought by the old Cannock Urban District Council in 1933 from the 6th Marquess of Anglesey and is now scheduled as an ancient monument. At Red Moor, less than a mile to the south of the camp, is the site of the Cistercian abbey of Radmore.

King Stephen gave an area of land at 'Radmore' (now Red Moor) to two hermits, who with others founded the abbey in 1141. By June 1155 the monks had exchanged the land for other land at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire and by Michaelmas of that year the land was once again in the hands of the king.

A house at Chestall (or Cheshall) to the east of Castle Ring seems to have been held by Simon de Rugeley of Hawkesyard (in Armitage parish) in 1333 and by James de Rugeley in 1370. A descendant sold the house in 1562. Chestall was mentioned in 1595 as on of the bounds of the manor of Cannock, and Chestall Hall in Cannock Wood was mentioned in 1640. By the end of the 18th century the farmhouse called Chestall was owned by the Earl of Uxbridge and between at least 1834 to 1892 was occupied by the members of the Darling family, who were land agents to the Marquess of Anglesey. The next tenant was John Reid Walker followed by Arthur Chetwynd. In 1938 the house was sold by the 6th Marquess of Anglesey to Charles Wootton whose widow had put it up for sale by 1956.

The house, which has an 18th century farmhouse as its core, was much enlarged in the middle of the 19th century and is now a red-brick mansion with stone dressings in the Tudor style.The once extensive stabling and farm buildings have now been converted into luxury dwellings.

The predominant industry in the Cannock Wood area was coal mining and it is mentioned in historical records that there were three colliers of Cannock Wood in 1601. In 1688 Lord Paget granted a lease of his mines at Cannock Wood, 'Newhay' and elsewhere in the vicinity. There were pits on land a little to the north west of New Hayes on the site of the old Cannock Wood Colliery in 1775 and in 1820 a colliery called Park Colliery was noted on the site. In 1865 and 1874 the Cannock & Rugeley Collieries Company sank two shafts at Cannock Wood Colliery which produced what was termed as the best coal in the Midlands.

The presence of slag and refuse on the western slopes of Castle Ring may indicate the site of a bloomery (or iron works) although the oaks growing out of these deposits indicate its long disuse.

A Congregational chapel with 120 sittings was erected in Chapel Lane, Gentleshaw, in 1835, but has been closed for 50 years and is now derelict. In contrast, a Wesleyan chapel, built in the previous year, in Chapel Lane Cannock Wood, to accommodate eighty, is still very active. A third chapel, Primitive Methodist, stood in Cannock Wood, close to the present entrance to Beaudesert Scout Camp, but after being used as a reading room and a Scout headquarters it was finally demolished to make way for a house.

The old Village Institute, a surplus pre-war Army hut, stood on land behind the school but was demolished when extra playground space was needed for the school and finally replaced in 1967 by the present Village Hall in Budds Road. This hall stands next to the Beaudesert Sports Field, given to the village in 1946 by the then Earl of Uxbridge and administered by the villagers themselves.

Staffordshire Hoard To Stay In The Midlands

The hoard of Anglo - Saxon gold unearthed by a Burntwood metal detectorist has been saved for generations of families to enjoy, after a huge fundraising campaign hit its £3.3 million target. the awe-inspiring find was discovered in a field near Hammerwich by Terry Herbert from Burntwood - shown below with a few items from the hoard.

The iconic hoard which included 1,500 pieces of treasure will now stay in the Midlands after a £1.3 million goverment grant boosted the £2 Million already dummed up by a high profile public appeal. The Grant needed to safeguard the hoards future was rubberstamped at a meeting of the national heritage Memorial fund (NHMF) trustees on tuesday.

The Treasure has now been safley secured for Birmingham Musems and Art Gallery, Stoke on Trent. On January 13 2010, the art fund launched the campaign to save the Staffordshire Hoard on behalf of both museums, with a £300,000 grant and generous pledges of £100,000 each from Birmingham and Stoke City councils.

Since the launch of the campiagn over £900,000 has been raised through public donations and over 100,000 people have visited the Staffordshire hoard displays in Stoke on Trent, Birmingham and the British Museum.

Stephen Deuchar, director of the Art Fund said: "We have been absoulutly bowled over by the enthusiasm and fascination the Staffordshire Hoard has sparked amoung the British public, as well as visitors from abroad. I hope this will give the Midlands a headstart with the next stage in fundraising for the conservation, research and display of the treasure"

Dame Jenny Abramsky, chair of NHMF said: "We are delighted to be able to announce this news today. the Staffordshire Hoard is an extraordinary heritage treasure. It is exactly the sort of thing the national heritage memorial fund was set up to save, stepping in as the 'fund of last resort' when our national heritage is at risk."

A further £1.7 million must be found so the Hoard can be properly conserved, studied and displayed. The Hoard was found in July 2009.

A new batch of approximately 60 kitchen chairs are currently going through our workshops, they are coming up a treat and they will be advertised in the next few days.
We are also working on the restoration of a pair of wrought iron gates, a large marble topped garden table and an excellent garden bench, these few items will be advertised over the next 2/3 weeks.

Going out tomorrow is a church bell to Germany and by coincidence a large garden urn on two pallets is also going to another client in Germany.

Recycle old radiators or buy new ones??

Recycle - that is the "green" answer- or is it??

In the past we have salvaged old radiators from an old school or hospital, we have removed all of the old paint and then re-painted them, pressure tested them and then sold them - very green I hear you say - and yes I agree - to a point.

Then we get a call - the old radiator has developed a leak on the nice customers new 100% wool carpets- but we pressure tested it?

The pressure test does not give a full set of results - the inside of an old radiator that has been in a school for 80 years starts to perish from the inside - and most of the internal deterioration occurs at the top of the radiator. When air gets into a radiator system it sits at the top of the radiator that is why the bleed nipple is at the top. But this air/water mixture starts the internal erosion. The amount of internal corrosion cannot be easily seen.

So we end up replacing the carpet and apologising about the mess. And the customer buys an alternative heat source.

So now look at the “greenness” of the whole scenario – including all of the above!!!

The “new green way” is to scrap the old school and hospital radiators, whereby they are “melted” down to make new products such as new radiators!! Which are made and tested to British Standards, so no more ruined carpets?

That is why UKAA buy and sell NEW Cast Iron Radiators.

Modern production methods have allowed us to make exact copies of the Original Cast iron Radiator models – but with one big difference, we know what the inside of the New radiators look like!!
